Location: Children’s Room, Lower Level and Centennial Garden Space
Herring Run ArtsFest 2005 presents a creative hands-on activity for
elementary-school age children, teens, and family groups facilitated by
writer and photographer Cynthia Way from Brown University in
Providence, RI.
Cynthia’s original, interactive book “The Mystery of Light, Shadow, and
the Scary Thing” leads participants though a series of activities as
star sleuths, culminating in the creation of a personalized children’s
mystery book. Participants work in small groups to experiment with a
variety of photographic techniques using Polaroid cameras. Each
technique steps through another clue in the unfolding mystery.
Cynthia is funny, a creative thinker, and a talented teacher. You’ll be
sure to enjoy this fantasy adventure as you learn the basics of good
photography. (Participation is limited. Pre-registration is encouraged
by signing up at the library’s circulation desk in the Children’s Room
on the lower level of the library.)
Before coming to Brown where she is senior writer/editor for
educational publications, Cynthia was the Coordinator of Community
Programs at the International Center of Photography in New York City.
She developed and facilitated activities in which photography and
photographic archives inspired students to learn about social studies
and cultural history while they experimented with photographic and
perspective techniques.
